A wood chipper is a machine used to reduce tree and bushwood from their original state of branches, leaves, and trunks into woodchips.
Wood chippers are typically mounted on a mobile frame with wheels, snow runners, or on a truck or trailer. It is important to make them mobile so they can reach the area where the trees need to be cleared.
Does it have another name?
Before we move on, let’s see if there are other names for wood chipper. Wood shredder is the most common alternative name, although this is usually reserved for smaller machines that shred twigs or foliage. Both versions are basically the same in practice but have different blade types and sizes.
Why should you need a wood chipper?
There are many reasons to rent a woodchipper:
Saves you money. A wood chipper’s main purpose is to reduce the volume of trees and leaves you have just chopped down. You can reduce the truckloads of wood chips you send to landfill by reducing the amount of trucks you have to transport. This will save you money on disposal fees and labor. You might be able sell the woodchips to landscapers if you have their contact information.
Environmentally sustainable. Many municipalities have stopped burning garden waste and no longer accept it in the landfill. You can make your own woodchips and use it as mulch for your plants.
Affordable for the home. A wood chipper is an affordable option to remove unwanted branches and trees. You can split the cost of a wood chipper with neighbours if there has been a storm in your area and many trees have fallen.
Affordable for small businesses.A wood chipper is often too expensive for small tree-surgeon and landscaping businesses. The cost of the purchase and maintenance of a wood chipper is spread over the job cost. Downtime is not included in the cost.
There is always a problem when trimming, trimming, and removing trees or shrubs. Woody parts of plants don’t compost as well as other parts. You can’t just put the wood on the compost pile and hope it will rot down as the rest of the undesirable vegetation. To make it more compostable, the woody structure must be broken down into smaller pieces. This will give bacteria and other wood boring insects more work space.
By breaking down the cellulose into smaller pieces, it can be used for other purposes than composting. Bark and wood chips can be used to mulch around plants. They keep moisture in the soil and prevent the growth weeds. Wood chips can also be used as a top layer around garden walkways or children’s playground toys like swings, see-saws and climbing frames. They can provide a soft, padded ground covering in the event of falls.
The wood chipper can cut fresh and dry wood equally well. They will accept both leaves and foliage, and it doesn’t matter how long the feed stock is. Only the width and diameter of the wood are limitations. This will depend on how large the wood chipper is, the diameter of its opening into the cutting chamber, and the type of cutting component it has.
